In November of 2025, Sierra Protocol announced a partnership with Fireblocks to implement institutional-grade custody of the reserves backing SIERRA. Today, we are excited to announce our partnership with Station70, taking Sierra’s commitment to institutional-grade custody and security a step further by implementing Station70’s industry-leading disaster recovery solution.
What are Backups and Disaster Recovery?
In simple terms, Backups are encrypted copies of critical recovery material generated by Fireblocks. They are designed to enable users of Fireblocks, like Sierra, to restore access to cryptoassets if Fireblocks ceases to operate and Sierra’s workspaces are temporarily lost or corrupted.
Disaster Recovery refers to the broader process of implementing Backups to resume operations and regain access to cryptoassets secured by private keys generated by Fireblocks. Since cryptoassets are bearer instruments, the loss of keys means the permanent loss of funds. Therefore, implementing Backups and Disaster Recovery processes are critical to safeguarding cryptoassets and mitigating tail risk.
Why Partner with Station70?
Station70’s team has a breadth of experience with cryptography, cryptoasset custody, multi-party computation (technology underpinning Fireblocks), and operational security. They have purpose-built a comprehensive solution that relies on cutting edge technology rather than legacy systems like storage in bank vaults. The platform used by Sierra is entirely self-service, which helps to expedite business continuity in the event of a major disruption.
Station70’s technological advantage has been built on the principle of defense-in-depth. Their infrastructure combines AWS’s Key Management Service and Nitro Enclave trusted execution environments with hardware-based protections using HSMs and YubiKeys. This comprehensive technology stack is supported by third-party audits, penetration tests, and SOC-2 aligned controls. Altogether, Station70 has developed the industry-standard in safeguarding Backups and supporting the implementation of a Disaster Recovery process for clients like Sierra.
“We built Station70 to fix a problem we experienced firsthand. In institutional crypto, recovery too often depends on manual steps, offline processes, and the hope that everything works when it matters. That’s not acceptable. Backup and disaster recovery need to be built into the system, easy to execute, and provable ahead of time. Institutions shouldn’t have to guess whether recovery works.” Nathan Bekerman, Head of Product
As part of Sierra’s partnership with Station70, Sierra receives a Backup Attestation report from Station70 confirming that all recovery members have their devices available and ready, alongside all processes having been implemented. Sierra will display this annual Backup Attestation report on its Transparency Dashboard.
“We have been very impressed throughout the due diligence and onboarding process with Station70. They are clearly the industry leader and set the standard for implementing Backups and Disaster Recovery processes. We’re confident that our partnership further cements SIERRA as a Liquid Yield Token with institutional-grade controls and processes around cryptoasset custody.” Mitchell Nicholson, Core Contributor at Sierra.
